KUHL COMMENTS ON STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

Washington, Feb 2 - U.S. Representative John R. "Randy" Kuhl, Jr. (R-Hammondsport) reacted to President George W. Bush's annual State of the Union address.

"The speech is a good preview of our agenda for the upcoming session in Congress," said Rep. Kuhl. "We're a nation at war, and we're going to take care of our troops and the families of any casualties. Of course the president is not going to let the important domestic issues fall off the radar screen. There will be a serious debate here in Washington about how to strengthen Social Security, keep our economic recovery going, and help create jobs.

"Another key aspect of the President's agenda is fiscal restraint," Rep. Kuhl continued. "Fiscal discipline is critical to our nation's future competitiveness, and we have to get our soaring deficit under control. That's no easy task, but the President has asked us to join him in putting together a plan to spend the taxpayer's dollars wisely.

"I've been at the last 24 State of the State addresses in Albany, so it's great to be able to attend the State of the Union address now," said Rep. Kuhl. "Next to the presidential inauguration which was held here just two weeks ago, this has to be the most exciting event in Washington, and it's another reminder of what a privilege it is to represent the people of the Southern Tier, Finger Lakes and Rochester area in Congress."

Rep. Kuhl attended the speech in the House of Representatives Chamber. It was delivered by the President before a joint session of the House and Senate.
